The Geres deliver

Watch actor Richard Gere's tributes to his father Homer's service as a Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer. These 30-second clips, created for the Meals on Wheels Association of America (www.mowaa.org), are being shown as public service announcements on television stations nationwide.

These are large files. If you play them and they "sputter," hit the pause button and wait until the transmission catches up with your viewing.

What we do -- with your help

Delivering nutrition and more to neighbors in need

Friendship Trays delivers about 750 meals daily to elderly, handicapped, and convalescing people who are unable or greatly restricted in their ability to prepare or secure meals and who reside within the area we can reach with our corps of drivers. Deliveries are at the lunch hour but the meal is a full one, more like what many people are accustomed to for dinner.

This meal consists of two separate containers, one with meat or fish, vegetable and such, the other with carbohydrate and dessert. Also included is a container of milk or juice. Diet orders are obtained for all clients from their doctors, and a range of special diets are available to fill doctors' written orders for certain medical conditions.

Individuals may request Friendship Trays or they may be referred by others. Look for more information on signing up yourself or a loved one.

What makes Friendship Trays possible is volunteers. They come as individuals, as members of faith-based communities, and as teams from area businesses and civic organizations. Without them, this work would not be possible.

While all recipients are asked to pay for their meals based on their ability to pay, recipient income alone does not pay for Friendship Trays. Sponsors include approximately 80 faith-based communities and organizations, as well as civic organizations and businesses. Other groups are welcome to join at any time, through donations of time as volunteers or as donors of the financial resources that allow us to serve all who need nutritious meals. support.

Meals are delivered Monday through Friday with the exception of the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, July Fourth. Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. (Meals on these days will be delivered by special order only.)  Weekend meals are also available upon request in limited areas.

Volunteers begin their routes between 10:30 a.m. and noon. If you want to get a sense of what Friendship Trays is all about, now's the time to come for a visit. Watch the process. Listen to the bustle and banter. Soak up the energy and commitment of the people who make Friendship Trays possible. Ready to come? Here's a map and directions to our kitchen in South End.
