For 10 years ending in 1999, Athens, then known as Tia McCutcheon, led Friendship Trays through a period of constant growth to meet the need for home-delivered meals for Charlotteans who could not prepare their own meals.

Athens also oversaw Friendship Trays' move from St. Martin's Church on 7th Street to its current location in donated space in South End.
