You get discounts, Friendship Trays benefits during Macy's Sept. 20 'Shop for a Cause' promotion

Buy a little. Buy a lot. Either way, Friendship Trays will benefit.

It's Macy's annual "Shop for a Cause" promotion, and this year Friendship Trays is participating.

Shop for a Cause promises shoppers discounts of 20% on some goods, 10% on others. Some merchandise in the stores will carry no discount.

And each holder of a "Shop for a Cause" pass, after using the pass to buy discounted items, may deposit the pass in a collection box in the store to enter a drawing for a $500 Macy's gift card.

So where do you get your "pass" to shop at a discount?

Macy' has supplied Friendship Trays with 100 passes and asks that shoppers donate $5 to Friendship Trays for each pass.

If you'd rather get your pass by mail, send your donation for $5.00 or more to Friendship Trays, 2401-A Distribution St., Charlotte, NC 28203. Mark your donation "Shop for a Cause" and we will send you your pass by mail.

Macy's shoppers on Sept. 20 may get a pass for $5 at the store. But donations made at the stores will be divided among all participating nonprofits. So obtaining a pass from Friendship Trays will maximize the benefit to Friendship Trays.

In this promotion, the $5 donations are the only financial benefit to Friendship Trays. Macy's has not committed to sharing any portion of Sept. 20 sales with the participating nonprofits. It will not reward Friendship Trays for sending new customers its way.

But let us make a suggestion:

After you're through shopping on Sept. 20, look over your receipts. Total all you saved from the 10% discounts and the 20% discounts. Then consider donating some or all of those savings by writing a donation check to Friendship Trays.

Shop for a Cause was launched in 2007. Macy's said the effort raised $9 million for charities nationwide a year ago.
