Steak today!

Most trays delivered to Friendship Trays recipients on Monday, Aug. 25 will carry a special treat: steak.

The New York strip and other steaks were donated by the Trader Joe's store on Rea Road in Charlotte.

Steak is a rarity at Friendship Trays. It is, um, a bit beyond our budget. But Kitchen Manager Sibyl Durant and her staff made sure this donation got into the menu rotation.

Trader Joe's donations regularly include produce, cheese, bread, desserts -- and flowers. Flowers donated earlier this week were taken by volunteer drivers Friday to the recipients they serve.

The tray pictured above was not specially prepared. Durant just went into the refrigerator, pulled out a tray and ripped off the plastic wrap before the picture was taken. Then Durant went back to the kitchen, re-sealed the tray and refrigerated it again for Monday delivery.
