As Betsy Brenner, left, and Whitney Stringer made their way through
Druid Hills delivering nutritious meals in Monday's drizzle, one
recipient watched carefully and waved through the window. Another pulled
a bathrobe tightly around her and left cover of a porch to make a
personal inspection:
The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was delivering Friendship Trays.
As the photos below attest, Charlotteans loved the visit. Even a pair of
police officers stopped so one could take a cell phone picture of the
other standing with Brenner and Stringer. Such things happen wherever
this crew goes in the Southeast, Brenner says.
Stringer and Brenner take turns driving the unusual vehicle. One gets
out to be spotter when they must put the Wienermobile in reverse. How
often does that happen? Only twice on Monday's route as they retraced a
few blocks to deliver a meal they had overlooked. Not bad for first-time
volunteers!
If you'd like to volunteer to deliver for Friendship Trays, Brenner and
Stringer can attest that it really doesn't much matter what you drive.
Call Volunteer Coordinator Lani Lawrence at 704-333-9229 for more
information. Or stop the next Wienermobile you see!
