Roller Girls take on New River Valley March 16

The Charlotte Roller Girls, who brought all-female roller derby back to the city in January, face off against the River Valley Roller Girls from Fort Smith, Ark. on Sunday, March 16. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the bout begins at 5 p.m. at Cricket Arena, 2700 E. Independence Blvd.

Click on the River Valley logo at left to go to that team's website, which features the usual photos of car-wash fundraisers and visits to the local emergency room.

What's the connection between roller derby and Friendship Trays? The women on the Charlotte team have designated Friendship Trays as a nonprofit partner and have promised to donate a portion of gate receipts to their area meals-on-wheels program.

Friendship Trays had a presence in the concessions area of Cricket Arena at the last bout to do a little outreach to folks whose moms and dads may soon be homebound or chronically ill and in need of home-delivered meals. Even if they didn't lose their knees playing roller derby in their youth. Look for us again at the March 16 bout.

As for upcoming bouts: The Charlotte team plays the Derby Devils in Savannah, Ga. on Saturday, April 19.
