From garden to meals: Sardis Presbyterian donates produce
The Sardis Presbyterian vegetable garden has been dry. The tomatoes were small.
But that meant they were just the right size to cut up and serve in a Friendship Trays meal box.
So the church donated three boxes of its tomatoes. And Kitchen Manager Sibyl Durant set them in the fridge to cool before preparing them for use.
Executive Director Lucy Bush Carter says that meal plans are prepared in advance, but they can be changed to accommodate fresh produce from area farms and gardens.
Last month, recipients ate cantaloupe cubes after Society of St. Andrew gleaners brought a pickup truck load of the fruit from a China Grove farm. In July, staff were cutting up up and cooking zucchini rescued from a Union County farm.
