The Day The Lights Went Out

 

The windstorm on Monday, April 16 knocked out power at Friendship Trays. Food had been cooked but meal trays were not yet served and sealed. The sealing machine, lower right, was useless without electricity. So as volunteers and staff filled trays in near-darkness, the hand-activated crimping machine at left was returned to the line. Electricity was restored after meals had left South End for delivery.
