A tree line has separated the Distribution Street warehouses from those on higher ground facing Dunavant Street.

On Tuesday, the tree line was broken to give a rebuilt Friendship Garden more sun.

Ronald Johnson, center above, had been hired by Slow Food Charlotte to remove trees and brush from the hillside. For overall tentative schedule of work, see Sept. 2 entry.

Plans underway to rebuild the garden

Above, key players in the Friendship Trays Garden consult about plans to rebuild the Friendship Trays garden. From left are landlord Bruce Parker of Parker Medical, Lucy Bush Carter of Friendship Trays, Rich Deming and Thom Duncan of Slow Food Charlotte and Friendship Trays garden volunteer Henry Owen.

Initiating the process to prepare the site began Wednesday afternoon.

Rebuilding the garden will be coordinated by Slow Food Charlotte, the group whose members devoted extensive hours to creating this year's garden.

At a noon meeting, Slow Food's Thom Duncan outlined a work schedule designed to allow a fall garden to be planted, and to have all work accomplished before a planned fund-raiser for the garden that is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23. More will be posted about the fund-raiser next week. The tentative work schedule discussed Thursday included:

Sept. 9-10: Owen  and volunteers will harvest the summer garden and clear beds of vegetation.

Sept. 10-11: A contractor will clear the bank behind the garden (seen in the background in the picture at left) of debris, vines and some trees.

Sept. 12-13: Volunteers will disassemble the wooden beds and move the dirt into a pile on an adjacent property.

Sept. 14-15: A contractor will level the site, then cover the site with pit gravel.

Sept. 16: An electrician will wire power to the site.

Sept. 17: A contractor will deliver dirt that will be stockpiled on the bank.

Sept. 18: Vendors will deliver stone, dirt and the locust posts for fences.

Sept. 19-20: Volunteers will build garden beds using both stone and wood, set posts for fences and a gate, fill the beds with dirt and possibly begin planting.

Sept. 21-: Planting will continue as needed.

Sept 25-27: Volunteers will install a water feature in the center of the space, build cold frames, assemble fencing and continue planting.

At times to be determined, strings of lights will be hung above the space for evening events, sculpture and planters will be placed, and schoolchildren will be on site to paint the beds.
