Last
Day
in the
Summer Garden
Sept. 11, 2009
It was a bittersweet day in the garden. The last full day of the summer garden. The garden built by topsy and decorated by kindergartners.
Much demolition had already occurred. Peppers and sweet potatoes had been pulled, and the herbs set aside in pots for replanting.
But this was the last day for the butterflies and bees to find the okra blossoms. It was the last day for the green tomatoes to reach for the sun.
On Saturday, Slow Food Charlotte volunteers were scheduled to dismantle the remainder of the summer garden. Slow Food has an ambitious schedule (Dirt Diary, Sept. 2) as it transforms the garden patch behind a Distribution Street warehouse into an educational showplace for coming seasons.
They will set aside wood and dirt for reuse. But it was the last day for full-blown thread of sayings painted on the garden beds by student members of the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice.
Below are pictures of the garden on its last day. What develops in its place will be chronicled in future entries in the Dirt Diary.
