We hear from lots of people inquiring about, well, "What is a Friendship Tray?" and "Can I get one?" Elsewhere we'll report on those calls, letters, e-mails and visits to our South End facilities.

Most but not all of those calls result in service to new recipients. The information charted above is about people who, during a number of recent quarters, were added to the program. The patterns above are clear and, we might suggest, rather consistent over time:

New recipients are mostly female, which is in line with life expectancy statistics. Guys, take better care of yourselves!

We track race of our new recipients for this reason: The conventional wisdom that nutritional services like meals-on-wheels programs are needed only by minorities is simply false. Whites routinely comprise half or more of the recipients added to this program.

Friendship Trays has not been utilized heavily in the Hispanic community. With that community growing and with younger family members more often employed than years ago, we are anticipating that Hispanics' use of Friendship Trays will grow.
